The Rhone Valley
The Rhone valley is home to some of the most exciting wine producers in France with a wide range of styles and prices. We're highlighting some of the best you can find here in New Zealand, many from the superb 2007 vintage. We'll be showcasing wonderful reds and hard to find whites from both the North and South of the Rhone Valley, telling you more about what the differences are between North and South and why this region is worth exploring further.
Thursday 29th April
The Italian Job
No country frustrates the wine lover more than Italy. It's easy to spend too much and get such little in return or to be confused by the complex names, regions and styles. However, for those wanting to know more there is hope. There's plenty of good value Italian wine in New Zealand but the key to happy shopping is knowing what to look for. Let us be your guide through the labyrinth that is 'vino Italino' as we show some classic wines from classic regions and some great value, lesser know delights from the more unknown corners of this beguiling country.
Thursday 20th May
Spanish Fiesta
There's more and more excellent value Spanish wine available in New Zealand than ever before. With such a choice how do you sort out your Rioja's from your Jumilla's, Valdepenas from Priorats or even pronounce Rias Baixas? Join us for a tour around this exciting country, taking in the classic and the not so well known and at the same time learn some helpful tips on which regions are worth spending your hard earned dollars on.
Thursday 3rd June
New Zealand Chardonnay vs French Chardonnay
We all know France makes some of the best Chardonnay's in the world but how far has New Zealand come? Arguably New Zealand, dollar for Euro, offers better value for money, but are they as good? Find out as we put Hawke's Bay, Marlborough and Central Otago head to head against the Cote D'Or, Chablis and the Macon, comparing not only the styles but the ideas behind the wines. Will it be 'Vive le France' or 'Go, Kiwi'?
Thursday 1st July
The Best New Zealand Pinot Noir
Central Otago dominates the Pinot Noir scene here in New Zealand, but come and find out just how interesting the other regions are when put up against the best of the best. We will taste wines from all regions including Hawke's Bay, Martinborough, Marlborough, Waipara, as well as the infamous Central Otago!
Thursday 5th August
Big and Beefy Aussie Reds
It's not just Shiraz that makes Aussie reds a symphony of fruit flavours. There's also Grenche and Mouvedre, Petit Verdot and Durif- all making blistering reds with more muscle than an Outback sheep shearer. We'll show you there's more to these kind of reds than just blackcurrant jam and a slap on the back as well as giving you a chance to try some wines from lesser known Aussie wine producing regions. Sounds ripper, mate.
Thursday 2nd September
Magical Loire
It may be cliched but the Loire valley does conjours up quintessential France with rolling hills, fairytale castles and sleepy, mediaevle villages. The wines, too, can also be magical but are little known outside France. With the exception of Sancerre, who knows about Saumur, Vouvray or Savennieres? Even Muscadet, a wine so French it might as well wear a beret, is little known in New Zealand. Without wishing to extend the cliche, allow us to gently guide you down the Loire river showcasing some of it's superb white wines along the way.
Thursday 7th October
Upside down Cabernet: Australia vs New Zealand
Both make world beating Cabernet Sauvignons, both countries have their own styles. Whether it's the unashamedly hedonistic New World styles from Coonawarra or the more restrained, Old World examples of Hawke's Bay both countries make wonderful, age worthy wines. We've some great examples to compare, including some older vintages from both sides of the Tasman. Whether your preference is for no worries or you'd rather be sweet as this promises to be a great snapshot of winemaking in both countries.
Thursday 4th November
A fresh look at New Zealand Pinot Noir
The grape that is fast becoming the signature for New Zealand fine wine is capable of making such a broad brush stroke of styles that the brilliant wines made by smaller producers get lost in a sea of jammy Central Otago's and watery Marlboroughs. We're the original Pinot nuts (peanuts?) here at the Winevault and would love to show you some of those brilliant wines being made by those brilliant producers It will also give us a chance to highlight the different styles these guys are making. If you've an interest in New Zealand wine this is a top value tasting.
